The power suit is trending this year and we are in love, yet still, we want more. While we adore that the suit is back in fashion, this time we are hoping it truly transforms into an enduring staple of the female wardrobe. We have long been fans of the power suit because it stands for much more than fashion- it is as much about empowerment (gender divide aside) of the wearer.
In the early days, women, in particular, began wearing the power suit largely to fit into the corporate lifestyle. With the business world resembling a boys club, women used the power suit as a vehicle to fit in and be taken seriously. It has been a ride since, with women’s suits moving between softer free-flowing silhouettes, structured shoulders and feminine interpretations.
This year, it seems the suit depends entirely on the occasion. We are seeing suits for different industries, for significant events, different personalities and even ‘power suits’ that are not really suits in the traditional sense!
The modern power suit is an ensemble that brings some of the original elements of the uniformed outfit into a new street style mindset to make us feel confident, always.

Gigi Hadid’s 2017 Met Gala look introduced us to a new interpretation of the power suit: a deconstructed one. While not a power suit in the traditional sense, this suit dress fused the empowerment of uniformed clothing with the femininity of a classic gown.
While we may not have an occasion as grand as the Met Gala (unless you’re in the fashion industry) to test this new look, we can embrace the deconstructed trend with an inspired top paired with much simpler jeans or slacks.
#2- Laid Back Stripes
Kendall Jenner showed us all how to wear a more relaxed suit on the streets of New York earlier this year. Pairing the retro-inspired outfit with white sneakers and a simple white tee made Jenner seem incredibly cool and effortless. It’s the perfect outfit for the more creative types who walk amongst us.
#3- The Flirty Approach
Georgia Fowler nailed the flirty twist on the classic black suit at the Dion Lee show in 2017 Mercedez-Benz Fashion Week Australia. Pairing a tailored black ensemble with a crop not only showed off the models figure, but also gave her the cool-confidence we all crave. This one should be saved for the nights where a sophisticated party meets the dance floor.
#4- Less is More
Opting to focus on the upper half of the suit, Bella Hadid donned a bright blazer dress that replaced the usual flirty feel of a pink dress with an edgy self-assured quality. Meant for a night on the dance floor, this outfit is for the party girl after-hours.
#5- Wake up on Wall Street
Romee Strijd in this slick grey suit at 2017 Milan Fashion Week is meant for the New York career woman. Looking ever the professional, this suit is what we should wear when we want to be taken seriously.
#6- Classic White
Olivia Palermo in her black-trimmed, white suit is what we dream of when we think of next Summer. Perfect for the brunch that continues on into the evening, this outfit is meant for the businesswoman who has no time to change between social events.
#7- A Classic Twist
Putting an edgy twist on the classic black suit, Melbourne model Steph Claire Smith’s outfit from the Sass and Bide show at MBFWA is sleek and sexy. Perfect for the fashion party after-hours, wear this when you want to keep a little mystery.
#8- For Everything
Bella Hadid wears the most versatile power-suit yet. Elegant and simple, this suit can be paired with almost anything for the days you want to feel comfortable ruling the world.
#9- Millennial Drem
Okay, we know this outfit definitely isn’t a suit in the traditional sense, but it is a suit we would LOVE to rock. Gigi in Millennial Pink for the launch of her Gigi x Vogue Eyewear collection is the epitome of the modern girl- we can look powerful in anything.
#10- The Tracksuit
We have never been quite so impressed by how casual the power suit can be. Karlie Kloss pairing her black blazer with red track pants has us in awe! Keep this one in your wardrobe for the days you will be walking everywhere.
